The game starts off with the main character Ryker Dublin—a 28 year old soon-to-be priest—and their friend/mentor Leon Tremblay, whom is already a priest, breaking into an abandoned church for shelte from a storm. Ryker decides to explore the place, while Leon stays and starts a small fire, using one of the trash cans, for warmth. Ryker finds a book on dreams, before—supposedly—passing out. Leon goes to find Ryker, gifting them a yogurt cake for their birthday when he does. Leon tells Ryker that he will be in the main lobby if they need him, and Ryker follows after him. However, they find Leon with several, deep gashes in his upper abdomen; just between his ribs. Ryker helps bring Leon over to the confessional so he can rest easier, when Leon grabs something out of his coat—a bible—and hands it to Ryker. He instructs them to open it until he tells them otherwise, before he tells them to hide inside the confessional.
